A controlled blast is required to break up rock in a cutting at Graham Drive south at Sandy Beach on the upgrade section.
The Pacific Highway is closed in both directions while the blast is carried out; expected time is from 1.35pm to 1.50pm.
Traffic management is in place to ensure the safety of the community, workers, motorists and pedestrians.

Demolition of the existing Diamond Head Drive overpass at Pacific Highway on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 August.
The highway will be closed to heavy vehicles in both directions for up to two hours at a time and a detour will be in place for light vehicles and buses.
Closures of the highway will occur between
8pm and 10pm, Saturday
10.30pm and 12.30am Saturday to Sunday
8pm and 10pm Sunday
10.30pm and 12.30am Sunday to Monday.
Light vehicles and buses will be diverted along Graham Drive. A reduced speed limit of 60km/h will be in place.
Heavy vehicles are not permitted to use Graham Drive during this time however will be allowed to travel through the demolition area for about half an hour in between each closure.
The light vehicle diversion will be removed when the demolition work is completed and the work area cleared and all vehicles will be able to continue on their journey using the Pacific Highway.
Work may be extended to include Monday 13 August, if weather delays work on Saturday or Sunday night.
